SYNTHESIS OF BIO-NANOMAGNETITE AND ITS OPTIMIZED CONDITIONS FOR PHTHALATE ABSORBTION

Abstract:Motivation/Background: Magnetic polymeric nanoparticles have vast range of applications in various fields. Coating or encapsulating of magnetic particles with polymers is one of the most useful methods of modifying magnetic nanoparticles. As these coated particles have magnetic characteristics, they can be easily collected with a single magnet instead of burdensome and time-consuming methods such as centrifugation.
Method: In this work, nano magnetite particles were synthesized using co-precipitation method and then they were firstly coated with a single biodegradable co-polymer, i.e. poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and secondly with a mixture of two biodegradable polymers of PBAT and poly(butylene adipate) (PBA).
Results: Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum of these two bio-nanoparticles showed their characteristics. They were also used to absorb dibutyle phthalate and dioctyle phthalate from aqueous solutions. UV-Vis was used to characterize optimization of particle mass, time and stirring speed during absorption. XRD spectrum was also taken. Volume, time and stirring speed of desorption were also optimized. In addition, calibration was performed, and the isotherm was plotted for two particles.
Conclusions: According to XRD spectrum, particles were in nano range. They had acceptable biodegradation characteristics. They also were efficient in absorbing and desorbing phthalates and were collected easily through magnet.

EVALUATION OF DIELECTRIC STRENGTH OF EPDM ELASTOMER LOADED WITH ATH FILLER

Abstract:Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) electrical properties are improved by adding Alumina Trihydrate (ATH) filler. Composite of EPDM with ATH filler are prepared with 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% percentages of concentration. The dielectric strength of the composite samples are tested under various thermal conditions such as (25, 70,100 and 130) ᵒC to simulate the various types of climates and clarify the effect of high temperature on the electrical properties of elastomers. Composite samples were exposed also to different climate conditions such as wet and salt. The obtained results of the composite performance are analyzed and discussed in the light of the variations of the material microscopic structure.

CORRELATION OF ASPHALTENE SOLVATION WITH STABILITY OF CRUDE OIL EMULSION USING SCALING EQUATIONS

Abstract:Due to the simplicity of scaling equations and its applicability to colloid chemistry, the scaling theory is widely used in studying emulsion properties such as force profiles. Scaling equations were developed for the studied samples for correlation of asphaltene solvation with stability of crude oil emulsions. Correlations were made for viscosity and percentage water resolved by varying the volume concentration of toluene in heptol mixture that was used as solvent for the asphaltene re-dissolution. The study shows that tuning the composition of heptol allows fine control of colloidal forces between asphaltene surfaces in an organic solvent and therefore determines the stability state of the emulsion. Statistically derived correlation equations provide for a range in the aromaticity of the crude medium for which an optimum stability is observed and therefore gives good understanding on the control of emulsion stability. The study further shows that emulsion inversion can be achieved by adjusting the concentration of surfactant.

STABILITY ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN SPINDLE VIBRATIONS IN TRANSVERSAL DIRECTION AT CNC LATHE

Abstract:The paper presents an original method for stability analysis of the main spindle variations in transversal direction at CNC lathe, which by means of the Mihailov criterion and adequate software packages, establishes the dynamic instability character due to the specific processing conditions and to the grinding regime parameters. This creates the premises for rational design of the turning process, as well as for the structural design of the turning tool.

ADOPTION OF CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE AND ANALOG FORESTRY IN BUI DIVISION, NORTHWEST REGION, CAMEROON

Abstract:Analogue forestry involves blending traditional knowledge and science to recover and valorise indigenous knowledge, creating systems that are familiar to traditional societies and meet the needs of contemporary forest-dependent communities. Conservation agriculture is based the principles of minimal soil disturbance, permanent soil cover and crop rotations so as to achieve sustainable and profitable agriculture and improve farmers ‘livelihoods. Every farmer is a researcher, who experiments every season on his or her farm. Farmers who find something that works are likely to repeat it the next season, and to tell their friends about it. This study set out to examined the extent of the adoption of conservation agriculture (CA) and analog forestry (AF) in Bui, the sociocultural and economic benefits of these agricultural methodologies to the population. Feld observations, interviews and the administration of questionnaires was the methodology used. The data were analysed descriptively and by simple statistical techniques using SPSS. The findings posits that CA and AF have been greatly adopted thanks to the farmers, government and NGOs/CIGS in Bui Division. The adoption of these strategies have contributed at improving the socio-cultural, economic and environmental conditions of the people. Finally, the study concludes that there has been 81% adoption of CA and 61% adoption of AF which has significantly benefited the population through increase in source of income, environmental protection and drop in cost of production.
